Panthers Secondary is Chaos

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The unfortunate news panther nation received today is that backup cornerback Robert McClain has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Saints (currently third in the NFC South).  This means that the messy Panthers backfield just got more chaotic. The decision to not bring in a veteran corner by Dave Gettleman continues to tear the defense apart.

Drees Brees has been playing exceptionally well the last seven games hes played in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. He has thrown 27 passing touchdowns. You can bet he will be planning for a big day.

McClain started out as the nickle back with James Bradberry and Benewikere on both sides of him. He was forced to move over as a cornerback playing every snap when Benewikere was released and Bradberry was ruled out with an injury.

Instead of bringing in help from the outside, Gettleman continues to play the game on a budget. He promotes Daryl Worley into the lineup and signs Zack Sanchez from the practice squad. Will Sanchez be the savior of the Panthers defense?

Now with McClain unavailable to play against the Saints, Teddy Williams or Sanchez will get the start across from Worley who is on his second start. Colin Jones will play nickle. Several indicators are that the Panthers will also bring going to bring cornerback Lou Young up from the practice squad as insurance. However that has not been made official yet.

Drew Brees has thrown ten touchdown passes and only three interceptions thus far. His ability to pass from behind the line of scrimmage is dangerous to opposing defenses.

Williams, 28, has appeared in 35 games (no starts). He has 13 career tackles, two passes defensed, and one forced fumble.

Sanchez, 23, has appeared in two games (no starts). No recorded stats.

Worley, 21, has appeared in five games (one start). He recorded 15 tackles, no interceptions and three passes defensed.

Rivera refuses to believe that there is a real problem.

"You deal with it," Carolina coach Ron Rivera said. "It's what we have. We've got to line up and play, so we will show up and play."
