Ron Rivera Does Not Expect Coaching Changes for the Panthers in 2017. Do You Agree?

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Fans are always looking for someone to blame when their team fails to make the playoffs after a Superbowl run the previous season. As the regular season wraps up today, Black Monday comes around the following day. Several coaches around the league have already been terminated and several more are on the hot seat this coming week. Are the Carolina Panthers expected to make any coaching changes this week? Who would be the one to go? It certainly will not be head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera doesn't believe that there will be any coaching changes for the Panthers.

It has been a disappointing season with the Panthers being eliminated with a record of 6-9. They will play Tampa Bay to close out the season. This is the first time the team has not made the playoffs in five years.

“Remember, this is the same group that was 15-1. The same group that led the league in scoring. In the last five years we’ve had a top-10 defense (four times),” Rivera said.

It seems as though Mike Shula and Ken Dorsey have been the targets for coaches to be on the hot seat. Hatred towards these coaches originated from the regression of quarterback Cam Newton after his MVP season in 2015. He would have to have a perfect completion rate on Sunday to avoid posting his worst completion percentage in his career.

When Rivera was asked about whether the decision to fire assistant coaches would be his or Gettlemans he said, “That’s mine.”

“As I look at it and break things down, yeah there’s some things we have to work on and change,” Rivera said. “You guys have heard me talk about evolving. We have to. That’s just the truth of the matter. So there’s a lot of things we’re going to look at and break down as we go forward.”

I would not expect any new coaches if Rivera is making all of the decisions. Gettleman would have to take charge if he really wanted change. Rivera has mentioned that Cam is getting older (even thought he is 27) and how the team needs to evolve and change their offense. It seems like there are a couple of hints in his message but it hard to crack the code.

McDermott has run with a top-ten defense for four years and will likely get a couple of head coaching offers. If he gets an offer I expect he will take it right away.
